Peter Hopton is a Senior Associate in Howard Kennedy's Intellectual Property & Commercial team. Pete is an experienced solicitor focusing on non-contentious and transactional commercial and IP work.

Pete joined Howard Kennedy in March 2023. He trained at a top-10 City law firm, qualifying in 2015 into its intellectual property and media team. He later moved to a highly-respected media and entertainment law firm as part of their Commercial team. 

Pete has enjoyed a rich and varied career, including an in-house secondment with Selfridges, an international secondment in Hong Kong, and experience of alternative legal service provision from a role with a Big Four professional services firm. Pete has also completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice at the University of Oxford.

Pete's brings a wealth of experience and expertise in Commercial and Intellectual Property matters, across different industries and sectors, including advertising, sports, retail, media, and technology.

Pete delivers practical and commercial legal solutions for his clients. He's known for his straightforward approach, knowledge of different sectors, and expert drafting, negotiation and analysis skills.

  • Providing contractual advice to a fashion retail client on its arrangements with social media influencers to determine if contracts had been formed for the purpose of VAT-able services.
  • Drafting a suite of global football agency agreements (including representation and introduction) for clients wishing to set up a football agency.
  • Acting for a global network of leading advertising agencies on agreements for a range of areas, including media buying and planning, creative, production, branding, and promotions.
  • Advising a global music label on the T&Cs for its consumer-facing music publication and distribution service.
  • Drafting a suite of agreements to govern commissioned NFT artwork creation and NFT exploitation.
  • Advising a fashion designer about the legal-commercial considerations for the creation of a new cross-border sales platform. 
  • Acting for a sportswear manufacturer on its high-value and strategic sponsorship of a major English football club.
  • Advising on the sale of a sporting event.
  • Clearance advice in respect of various advertising campaigns.
